The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.
Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore's average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore's energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
It would be interesting to know how much energy was consumed last year by Gore and all the people that so lauded him yesterday for his movie.
this is slander by any definition
Is that you Al Gore?
This has already been seeded, and to some degree, proved false.
Tennesee does not recognize this company as legitimate. Gore has switched to green power energy sources and also had solar lights placed in and around his home, and many other things besides.
There's a much better rebuttal on one of the other seeds, but its 530 am, and I haven't had coffee; I just laugh at the people looking to smear the guy who isn't even running. What a waste of time.
To be fair the other seed was not from the same source and also seeded over 3 hours after mine.
I don't see it as a smear but as criticism, but to each his own.
Tennesee's government does not recognize this company as valid.
The don't show photos of the bills. They aren't a valid. Their only links on the website are to right-wing sites, though they claim to be non-partisan. They have no confirmed facts. They easily could've made these figures out of thin air.
I call that smear, not criticism. Gore has switched to green energy, which surely costs him more than regular electricity would. He also had solar panels installed on his house, which also aren't the cheapest thing to do (if it were, we'd all have them.) He checks his carbon footprint and has reduced it over the last year.
But yes, all fair criticism from a company thats not even recognized by the state its in, and has no proof yet of where it got the bills or whether it really has them at all.
I call that smear, not criticism.
I call it shenanigans.
Nice try UKMatt, but I wouldn't say they are trying to discredit Gore's message. If they were saying Global Warming wasn't caused by high energy usage why would it matter how much energy he uses? What they are saying is Gore is a hypocrite when he says people should lower their energy usage while he personally uses way more than the average.
c'mon...sometimes all you have to do to kill the message is to kill the messenger.
Foisting Gore as a hypocrite serves just that purpose.
I'd say attacking the TCPR is ad hominem. Then again, they haven't really been very forthcoming with their sources for this $30k number, have they?
C'mon bro, they can't reveal the sources. It's for your own safety. Trust them.
You think a politician is advocating one thing and then doing another?? I sure didn't see that coming. Wait, yes I did ... namely when he came to Berkeley in a limo and a caravan and then had his photo op coming out of a Prius.
Reminds me of Dennis Hastert who did the same a coupla months ago - go to some green en
His family car is a Lexus hybrid.
Got cut off...
dennis hastert who went to some green energy event and left in a cadillac escalade or something.
Gore's family car is a Lexus hybrid.
Damn, I seeded the same story from a different source. And that never happens around here.
Next Al is going to start telling people they need to be more animated.
"Stop acting so wooden people. It's creeping me out! Act like you got some life left in you, for crying out loud. The planet's dying!"
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore's energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
He's probably sitting on his couch in his air-conditioned living room watching the DVD of his movie over and over and over again, thus accounting for the spike in energy use.
I am wondering, however, how his use compares to other households of his size, rather than against the average American household. Is any kind of business performed at his home? Are there employees there who do more than just take care of the laundry and the dusting? How many people live there?
This is a little like comparing apples to oranges, no?
On the other hand, I would expect that Mr. Gore would have inumerable energy-saving devices in his home, including solar panels and the like, and I would likewise expect that if he were using these things, he'd be really super vocal about it.
That was exactly my question! Glad someone asked it...
I am wondering, however, how his use compares to other households of his size, rather than against the average American household.
Yea, 18,000 kWh would power about 20 trailers for a month. Isn't that the average home in Tennessee?
@Prophet--by far that's the least intelligent contribution to a comment thread I've read on Newsvine all day, but it's early yet. Someone might still top it.
Maybe he has a grow-room in the basement?
I seriously doubt Tipper would let him get away with that.
;)
I would say that a grow room would zero out his carbon footprint right? I mean it only makes sense. And it's better than buying "carbon credits".
I say that if he DOESN'T have a grow room in his basement that we all suggest he builds one - for the planet of course.
while this does little to diliute his message, mr. gore does have some 'splainin to do.
hypocrisy is not pretty and i'm interested in how this one flushes out. mr. gores response and a second source need to be added to boil this down to what it is..
grrrrr
now that a little more information has come to light, i fell a lot better about mr. gore.
this article is just an uniformed hack at sensationalism and a pretty weak attempt to smear algo..
why is the right so frightened of what he has to say?
if he were just some dork with an inconsequential message, would it not be best just to ignore him?
there must be some meat in his message that the powers that be don't want us to know about.
there must be some meat in his message that the powers that be don't want us to know about.
Oh there is meat in his message and we know exactly what it is, a government watching my carbon footprint, a government willing to hurt the economy, all the while the 'Goreacle' is touring, pushing his agenda making movies and making money by telling us how to live our lives.
aj-
care to enlighten us on exactly how this might hurt the economy?
i'd agree it may shift things about, but our economy is so big and strong right now (according to your hero w) that a little shift here or there cannot possibly hurt it..
i'd love to see your rationale
care to enlighten us on exactly how this might hurt the economy?
There is a huge profit margin in energy distribution. Applying environmental controls would cut into this profit margin.
Wha.. Im in shock! After all the "oscars" were "green" according to Leo... Good Job Al..
Green if you don't count the fact that the Oscar statues were flown in from Chicago by United.
Wha.. Im in shock! After all the "oscars" were "green" according to Leo... Good Job Al..
So nice, he said it twice.
Reminds me of when I said the same thing four times in a row in one thread. XD
I am sure he lives in a sweet hut ... so I am not surprised his energy bill is higher than yours or mine ... and I am okay with that since he pays the bill.
Still, that his personal energy usage has gone up since making the movie is strange.
I wonder what dubya and Cheneys light bills are? I'm sure they put Al's to shame.
They aren't telling me I should ride a bicycle while they fly around in jets ... so they aren't hypocrites.
ya- they just fly around in jets and refuse to give a @!$%#.
tschreck, are you referring to the Mile High Club?
..not to mention the thousands of pounds of jet fuel he burns on his gulfstream jetting from photo op to photoop. How's that for some pollution, Al?
It's pretty well known that he purchases carbon credits to offset all of the air travel he uses throughout the year...
While I haven't heard it specifically noted, I wouldn't be surprised if he did the same for his home as well.
Carbon credits are a scam worthy of another thread.
Carbon credits are like the indulgences the church used to sell. Sure you are a sinner, but if you pay us enough we'll still let you into heaven.
Ask and ye shall receive. I've written an article on Carbon Credits available here: Al Gore's Electric Bill, Carbon Credits, and A Lesson In Economics
Thanks, Killfile. Good work as usual!
While it's no doubt true the Gore's Belle Meade home consumes more than the average, and more than is healthy for the planet, I would sure like some verification on these numbers, as last I checked, electric bills are not public information.
Perhaps not in your jurisdiction, but they may be in Belle Meade.
You compare the 'average' household to the household of someone w/that much space? (meaning... would the energy consumed by the average home be the same as the one consumed by a 'crib' style house?) And yes lets attack the man when we can't attack his argument.. what is that called ad hominem???
I don't know all the details of Gore's home but I do know both he and Tipper employee staff to work on their political projects. In this case, Gore's home is more like a small office building than a "typical American home" Also, from what I understand the electricity in TN is generated by the Tennessee Valley Authority using hydroelectric generators. Hydroelectric is the cleanest form of electricity generation we currently have.
I take issue with your last statement.... though it may be a clean technology in terms of emissions, I wouldn't say that it's clean when one looks at the entire ecosystem impact including fish runs. We may look to Solar or Wind as cleaner technologies.... though I am sure with any technology, it takes some fossil fuels to make the components (e.g. petrol to lube the turbines in a Hydro dam).
Good points. I'll have to do some research on the negative aspects of hydroelectric. I always thought it was relatively harmless to the environment.
while there may indeed be some issues with hydroelectric, they are minimal when compared to the alternatives..
well except for the tons and tons and tons of oils used to lubricate the turbines..
:-)
What's that saying about ad hominem attacks being the result of a weak mind devoid of any substantive arguments?
I'm not sure that I agree that this is ad hominem. This release from the TCPR calls into question Gore's conservation measures (though it's fairly devoid of substance to this end); it does not try to invalidate the benefits of conservation by attacking Gore.
It seems old Al and the rest of these "gulfstream environmentalists" arent about to inconvenience themselves with any of this global warming conservation crap are they. No, that is for the little people. The hard working slobs like ourselves. We, lower middle class, work our asses off, pay all the taxes average, barely have our heads above water stupid fools, while Al Gore and all his hollywood friends hob nob around the world in their jets, live in their 25000 sq.ft. mansions, drive their bentleys and ferraris and expect us working fools to do what is necessary to stop this imaginary crisis. Go to hell Al Gore.
If his house is actually 25000 sq feet, than it is actually more than 20 times the size of my house. In which case his energy use is nothing but average. Thanks for clarifying that.
So we should all get 25,000' houses. Then it's okay.
I'm happy with people like Cash, who only pause to comment when they can make snarky remarks. They don't ever respond to the comments that show Gore has done a damn good job at lowering his carbon footprint, they don't bother to be rational about the size of his house. Just the people who expect him and his employees and family to work and live in a house the size of a cubicle with solar paneling so that there is no expenditure. Then they'd @!$%# about the cost of the solar panels and complain he's got real plumbing. You aren't going to be happy no matter what he does.
i'm convinced that cash is doing all he can to wish away the specter of global warming because he lives in florida and he may be thinking that a rise in sea levels will send his property values plummeting.
i would think that as a supposed scientist, he should be able to grasp the evidence and make a solid case rather than the arguments that do come out.
but hey, what do i know?
I am an Internet scientist too. hahaha.
i hate articles like this.
if i win the lottery, i'm buying the @!$%#ing lamborgini LP640. I'll buy the @!$%#ing Honda Civic Hybrid, but I'm still getting the @!$%#ing lambo. He's the former vice president of the United States, yet some people want him to live in a shack. He's not Groundskeeper Willie.
Plus i'm sure he's gonna put mad solar panels all over his home. mad. solar. panels.
Al Gore has to be willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.
what in the flying @!$%#? he's been trying to tell this story for 30 years. he's done way much more to tell the world about global warming than any other individual on the planet. if he wants the mansion, let him have the damn mansion.
he doesn't upset me.
Sean Paul singing "We Be Burnin' not concernin what nobody wanna say" in the @!$%#ing desert, with fires shooting out on top of a vehicle, fancy trucks in the background, now that upsets me, and i love that @!$%#ing song.
Yeah... I'm sure that Matt Drudge financed the TCPR report.
ThinkProgress.com needs to get their facts straight too!
First and foremost, who procured his private utility bill, and how?
Tennessee Center For Policy Research President Drew Johnson has had close ties with the Exxon funded American Enterprise Institute and the Scaife funded National Taxpayers Foundation.
The Tennessee Department of Revenue has refused to label them as a legitimate group.
I think the point is that while people may believe in global warming, no one but no one is willing to inconvenience themselves on its behalf. Al can drone on at us to his bleeding hearts content, but until viable alternatives are introduced Americans will continue to decry the environmental carnage from their air conditioned homes and SUVs.
You all nuts? You expect rich people to live like paupers to earn the right, in your eyes, to tell the truth about climate change?
If he wasn't rich and an important politician no-one would have listened to him anyway!
Get off with the lot of you. There is no hypocrisy here, except maybe trying to kid people he drives a Prius. If he has money he is not required to be ashamed of it.
I think you nailed it... the rich can afford to live anyway they please. Gore is not exception.
Accountability, responsibility, consistency however do matter. I can recommend him a very good $1.5 million wind turbine that would just barely cover his annual electric consumption.
Trouble with Gore is he has made very public statements against the Auto industry, the need for everyone to ride bicycles, etc... and does very little beyond pushing policy to further regulate people's lives while he seldom conforms to the preached behaviors. Call it what you like.
So how is anyone supposed to get their message out without cash?
So unless he lives in a hut with no electricity, and walks everywhere he is a hypocrite. Not as big a hypocrite as Republicans who diddle young boys.
It's a common misconception that Republicans are opposed to the diddling of young boys. I wasn't sure about this, so I contacted my local Republican Party headquarters. They said diddle away, but no abortions. Anyway, this would only be the same if Foley had won an Oscar for a film about how it was wrong to diddle young boys.
PS. Diddle is a fun word, but never try to use it during dirty talk. Trust me, it doesn't fly.
Can anyone tell me how to clean a carbon footprint from a wool rug?
Now thats funny!
This from a recent review of the Oscars:
Al Gore was a good sport, pretending to have his speech cut short by the orchestra just as he was to announce he'd be running for president. Gore was there to thank Hollywood for being so environmentally conscious.
And as I drove through Beverly Hills on my way to the Kodak Theatre on Sunday, I could see the love for the environment in their well-manicured landscapes, which shielded their energy-guzzling mansions with the wrap-around driveways for multiple cars (not a Prius in sight — unless Mercedes is making them now). And I could see it in the many private airports where the stars house private jets for quick trips to Cannes.
I also read that the Oscar statuettes themselves were flown in from Chicago on a special private jet. Of course I also wondered how many of the actors would "take a bus or subway" as the text admonished behind Melissa Ethridge as she sang the oh-so memorable Oscar winning song. Just think how many of those carbon credits would be freed up if Hollywood actually "practiced" what they preached and didn't just CCCC (conspicuously consume carbon credits).
Look, if this is the kind of victory the right wingers need, let them have it. God Knows they have had a few defeats lately and they need a little ego bolstering.
tee hee
You know, a more thorough article might inquire into exactly what is consuming the power at Al Gore's place, instead of acting like global warming is some moral code and not physics. Al Gore is not the average American.
I don't know, the "lock box" idea looks pretty good in retrospect.
Plus, if you can't refute the testimony, Republicans love to discredit the witness, it's the way they do business if you haven't noticed. They love to stir up the emotions through misinformation and innuendo.
This comes from the dirty tricks box of calling someones sister "a card-carrying thespian" and his brother "a known philatelist." If you know what I mean.
critics are holding him to an unrealistic ideal. Think of Ed Begley. Was Ed on your personal radar before HGTV turned his homelife into a dog and pony show? No. How the f*** do you expect people to get out the word about environmental problems, by bicycle and bullhorn? Screw you, repubs. It's a hell of a lot more than any of your sorry asses have every done for the environment. (that's including you "wise use" vampires.)
critics are holding him to an unrealistic ideal
You're absolutely right about that. As I commented somewhere on one of the threads devoted to this topic, it wouldn't matter what Gore did to "walk the walk." There'd still be something his critics would say he should be doing, or doing better.
And, by the way, I'm assuming by your name that you're a John Hiatt fan?
