Obama Flier "I Won't Be Fulfilling God's Will Unless I Go Out and Do the Lord's Work."

advertisement

Obama's Kentucky flier shows Obama at the pulpit with a giant cross in the background. Its text reads "Faith. Hope. Change."

"My faith teaches me that I can sit in church and pray all I want," it says. "But I won't be fulfilling God's will unless I go out and do the Lord's work."

The Obama campaign downplayed the religious flier, noting similar pamphlets were circulated in other primary states.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Apparently, you would like to think so- in a negative way.

The fl-yer has class and expresses the sentiments of many Americans.

Why would FOX believe this to be anything other- than what it is????

I doubt it. From what I hear, Mr. Obama didn't hear anything the right reverend had to say :)

This flier disturbs me. It's like he is trying to paint the image that he is somehow Divine. I'm not voting for a religious guide, I'm voting for the President of the United States.

Though I don't like the flier I understand his strategy, and I suppose if it helps win votes and takes them away from McCain, then so be it.

I'm really against the recent trend of candidates trying to out-Christian each other, particularly when it's nothing but pandering and posturing. But if that's the current game, then this flyer plays it well. Plus, it's helpful in rural/conservative/uneducated/religious regions where a large percentage of people still mistakenly believe that Obama is a secret anti-American Muslim spy.

I don't think I took anything from this flier that wasn't meant to be taken from it. He is standing in at a podium in front of a cross, looking more like a pastor than an president. The only difference in how I understand it and how "rural/conservative/uneducated/religious," voters understand it is that I don't buy in to it.

Do they have pictures taken to be made into fliers and add lovely little quotes and distribute them? I doubt so unless they are trying to win favor or convince someone that they are steadfast believers.

You have yet to say what it is you think that this flier means. Do you really think that Obama, or any candidate in this race does anything without an underlying motive?

It makes perfect sense for the Obama campaign to be aggresive with Christian voters of all denominations. Look, they know that some people are believing these stories that he is a Muslim.

        They need to combat that.

Actually, the Obama campaign has been sending out these flyers in previous states too like Iowa and South Carolina, so it's not like this is new. What it shows is how the Obama campaign knew early on they had to deal with the Muslim rumors and his funny sounding name.

I don't blame him at all for trying to smooth over the Wright bit and the Muslim bit at once. People question his faith ALL. THE. TIME. But now, it's something new to @!$%# about. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. If you read the flier, I don't see how you're construing it as making himself to be divine.

For @!$%#'s sake, I'm atheist, and I think there's nothing wrong with someone showing they have a realtionship with God. ISN'T THAT WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO? Do the Lord's work? Communicate with God? But when someone actually makes this point, apparently they're ready for the loony bin. No wonder I'm not a christian. You can't make anyone happy.

Nobody minds when he distributes door hangers of himself in front of thousands and thousand of people holding up signs of "change". But heaven forbid (pun intended) if he have a door hanger with him in front of a cross. He must be trying to show he's holy and divine.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with him displaying that he is a believer in Christ either. I never condemned anyone for their personal beliefs. I also don't think that it was necessarily his intention to come across like he was, "divine," but that is the feeling it left me with, instead of a humble servant to the Lord. And as I've said before, I understand why this flier came out and I'm sure it has been effective at putting myths surrounding Obama's faith at rest.

Obama's pic portrays him as honest, with deep convictions.
